Why use low formaldehyde & formaldehyde-free resins?

In the last decade, formaldehyde has been officially classified as a hazardous material to health and environment. Thus, formaldehyde-free resins and other compounds have been on the rise for safer work environments and products. If you want – or need – to switch to low formaldehyde or even formaldehyde-free resins, our experts will help you to find equally powerful alternatives with less or no formaldehyde content.

While formaldehyde-free resins do not contain any formaldehyde, low formaldehyde resins typically contain less than 0.5%. Beyond that, ultra-low formaldehyde resins contain but traces of the hazardous compound with less than 0.1% allowing formulators to avoid labeling issues.

Our diverse PHENODUR® product line contains a number of phenolic resins with low free formaldehyde that can be used in BPA- NI can coatings allowing formulations which meet the strictest labeling requirements. PHENODUR® resins help provide an optimal balance of resistance, toughness, durability, and flexibility – that is why our low formaldehyde phenolic resins are a great choice in packaging applications.

PHENODUR® resin portfolio contains the formaldehyde-free PHENODUR® VPM 1150 which is a carboxy modified, non-yellowing co-curing resin that can easily be implemented in a wide array of applications. Besides being a formaldehyde-free resin, PHENODUR® VPM 1150 is also BPA-free making it a great alternative to phenolic crosslinkers.

Most of our CYMEL® and SETAMINE® products contain low amounts of free formaldehyde. Some CYMEL® products contain less than 0.1% free formaldehyde – such as CYMEL® 303 LF, CYMEL® 1161, and CYMEL® MB-98. Amino resins with low & ultra-low free formaldehyde can be formulated into a coating without additional labelling requirements for a broad variety of applications such as metal, wood, or industrial coatings.

Besides the low formaldehyde amino resins, allnex also offers alternatives that do not contain or emit formaldehyde on cure at all.  In bake applications for coil or automotive clear coat, the formaldehyde free, melamine based CYMEL® NF 2000A is the crosslinker of choice used in coil & industrial coatings, automotive clear coats, or metal packaging exteriors.  CYMEL® NF 3041 & CYMEL® NF 3030 are especially recommended for wood applications. CYMEL NF® 3030 can also be used in microencapsulation.  Coatings containing formaldehyde-free CYMEL® crosslinkers benefit from attributes like high durability, great resistance, good hardness, and hot/cold cycle flexibility.
